In FY 2016 / 17, the tax and penalty arising from IRAS’s GST audit amounted to $168m (from 3,113 cases). Even though GST has been in place since 1994, GST-registered Businesses are surprisingly still making mistakes in their GST treatment of transactions and GST reporting. The penalties for not getting GST right can be costly to businesses and should not be under-estimated.
GST errors can be reduced or avoided with a better understanding of the GST rules. Therefore, it is important to equip yourself and / or your staff with the right GST knowledge and learn how the rules apply to transactions to mitigate the exposure to penalties. IRAS has also indicated in its Voluntary Disclosure Programme that penalties can only be reduced or waived for timely voluntary disclosure of errors.
